I have been making my own laundry detergent for years. Not only do I save money doing so, but since I control the ingredients, I can keep it fragrance and dye free which does wonders for my son’s sensitive skin.

What You’ll Need
• 1 bar shaved soap (Fels Naptha or Ivory Soap)
• 1 cup of Borax
• 1 cup of Arm & Hammer Washing Soda (this is found in the laundry aisle)
• Essential oil (optional)
Directions
Stir the ingredients together (after shaving the soap with a cheese grater) and use 2 tbsp. per load of laundry. This method will work in HE front loader washers as well since it is a low-suds formula.
I always keep some of this on hand, sometimes I use detergent that I’ve been able to pick up for next to nothing with coupons but when I run out, I grab my homemade detergent.
So how much are you really saving? Well, I’m glad you asked! I checked out the Tide prices at Walmart and compared them to my homemade detergent recipe. Here’s the breakdown:
Tide cost per load = $0.23
Homemade detergent cost per load = $0.07
OR
40 loads of Tide at Walmart = $9.24
40 loads of homemade detergent = $2.80
